I will be first to say that I love David Lynch. He really can do no wrong as far as film. Also, I can say the same about his music. For someone that, to be honest, does not have musical talent has made some really good tracks in his day. He creates nice soundscapes with his vocals buried under sound and effects.

Well, this single is no different. I will say the first track is kind of silly. If you could mix U2's Beautiful Day with T-Pain, you would have this track. It is really hard for me to take anyone serious being autotuned, so this is no different. The second track, on the other hand, is a nice bluesy tune that takes me away from David Lynch.

So, I give this a B. The first track, I think I will skip, but 2nd gets a big thumbs up from me.

Peter Laughner and Friends - Take the Guitar Player for a Ride (cd-1994)

From Wikipedia: Laughner led a variety of groups. Among them were Mr. Charlie, Cinderella Backstreet, Peter & The Wolves, The Blue Drivers and Friction. However, his most enduring contributions were to Rocket From The Tombs and the early work of Pere Ubu. In addition to all this, he wrote for Creem magazine.[2]

Laughner was a voracious rock fan and writer, and was heavily influenced by Lester Bangs's writings. Like Bangs, Laughner worshiped Lou Reed, but also drew inspiration from folk and blues figures such as Robert Johnson and Woody Guthrie. He was a unique, visceral lead guitarist whose greatest influence was Fairport Convention guitarist Richard Thompson.

Laughner was briefly considered as a replacement for Richard Lloyd when he departed Television [3], a band whom he championed from their earliest days.

This compilation was my first exposure to The Cramps back when I was an early teenager. I thought this was as punk as it got. Sure, I had all the skate punk albums, sex pistols and minor threat. You name it, but this one really hit me hard. Plus, it was one of the first albums I thought I could play without ever learning how to play the guitar. Later on, I realized I was wrong. This kinda of magic is hard to reproduce.

This was produced by The Cramps and tracks 1, 8 and 10 were produced by Alex Chilton. Is it a coincedence that those are my favorite tracks. Not sure. Oh, well, enjoy.

I remember when I bought Richard Buckner's first record ... the sticker on the front read, "Dwight Yoakam on downers." It grabbed my attention, and I became an instant fan. Throughout his career though, I found myself disagreeing with that description. Sure, his voice is similar, but way more nuanced in my opinion, and the songwriting is way more complex and rich. Dwight's songs hit you directly, and you know what you're getting into. Buckner's hit you slowly and make you think long past the first listen. This is not his best album, but it was a tour-only (I think) acoustic sampling of his songs ... and an intimate primer. Far from the samples / loops of recent tours, this is Buckner alone and in total singer-songwriter mode. I highly suggest checking out the rest of the catalog. Good stuff.

I just heard The Goner today and I found it really interesting. They are the songs of Daniel Westerlund hailing from Sweden. They show elements of folk, drone and psych/shoegaze. I hear influences of Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), Jeff Magnum (Neutral Milk Hotel) and maybe Jason Molina (Songs: Ohio) . Very dark sounding, but very refreshing. Give it a listen.

Varnaline a.k.a Anders Parker has gone overlooked in many ways over the years. Varnaline produced albums from mid nineties to early 2000's and I think they really put out some good lo-fi, indie/folk records. Groups like Wilco and Son Volt we able to take some of the similar sounds of the time of the early nineties and move on to what they are today, but Varnaline never seemed to break out of the obscure. I think if you like Silkworm, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Wilco and some lo-fi qualities of 90's indie rock, I think you will like Varnaline. After watching the movie The Devil and Daniel Johnston, I have been consumed with his music this past week. I thought about posting quite of few of his works, but before I do that I decided just to post the remaster of two of his early cassette tapes.

This is definitely lo-fi and definitely insane, but there are several strokes of genius. So check it out if you haven't before and enjoy.

Mark Linkous - R.I.P. March 6th, 2010

I was shocked to here the news tonight that Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse took his own life. His family made this statement.

"It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There's a heaven and there’s a star for you."

So, in memory of an incredible singer, songwriter and musician I am posting one of my favorite releases.

This is another of raw early Superdrag that I think is a must to have. Both 360 and Fabulous 8-Track were produced by Superdrag and Nick Raskulinecz who later went on to do groups like the Foo Fighters. I will say this is my conspirancy theory, but Foo Fighters would not have had their sound if it wasn't for Superdrag. Call me a liar or full of shit, I might be, but I think somewhere along the way Dave Grohl got a hold on some Superdrag demos and suddenly the Foo Fighters had a sound. Oh, well, doesn't matter now I guess.

Anyway, get this fools.

This is the CD release of 360 Sound and other 7" releases Superdrag put out over time. I figure to post this instead of doing vinyl rips of the 7 inches. Most people associate Superdrag with their one hit of the late nineties, but there was a whole side to Superdrag prior to their major debut that not many have had a chance to hear. This is the epitome of raw "swirly" guitar power pop.

Bap Kennedy - Domestic Blues

I first heard Bap Kennedy when this album was being recorded. I had the pleasure of being in the studio to witness some of this being tracked. This is somewhat of a new school bluegrass/folk/Irish album. It has some big musical hitters backing him like Peter Rowan, Jerry Douglas, Steve Earle and the late Roy Husky Jr. This was produced by Steve Earle as well. It has a nice dry acoustic sound with some really great songs. I think this album is highly overlooked and you need to just download it and enjoy.

I first saw this band at the first Lollapalooza tour that featured Rollins Band, Butthole Surfers, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Jane's Addiction and of course Ice-T. This was the summer of 1991. During that time, Ice-T's O.G original gangsta album was out and he was promoting that and then he brings out this band. So, my first thought was gangsta's with guitars. It was pretty wild at the time, but I do think it was an attempt to get on the Anthrax/Public Enemy train.

Well, this is the original album that has the Cop Killer track on it. This was later removed from the album and this particular version was pretty hard to come by, but of course it sits on my shelf collecting dust.
